What is Counterpain PLUS?
Counterpain PLUS is a stronger member of Taisho’s Counterpain family, in a 50 g tube. It pairs the familiar counter-irritants — methyl salicylate and menthol — with an added anti-inflammatory ingredient to target swelling as well as aching. It is meant for pain with inflammation: sprains, joint pain, tendinitis and flare-ups of arthritis in a single joint. For general muscle stiffness, the original Counterpain is usually enough.
How It Works
Counter-irritants work by creating a sensation on the skin — heat, cold or tingling — that competes with the deeper ache for your nervous system’s attention. Methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) also has a mild anti-inflammatory effect. Cochrane reviewers found salicylate rubs give modest relief for short-term aches, with better evidence for strains and sprains than for arthritis.
The added anti-inflammatory works like other topical NSAIDs: it is absorbed into the tissue under the skin and reduces the prostaglandins that cause swelling and pain.
How to Use Counterpain PLUS
- Apply a thin layer to the painful area and rub in gently, up to 3 times a day.
- Use for no more than 7–10 days without medical advice.
- Wash your hands after use and keep away from the eyes.
- Apply only to unbroken skin — never to cuts, grazes, eczema or infected skin.
- Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, nose and genitals. Wash your hands after applying, unless you are treating your hands.
- Do not cover the area with a tight bandage or use a heating pad over it.
- Do not use more than one pain-relief rub on the same area at the same time.
- Stop and see a doctor if the pain has not improved after 7 days, or gets worse.
Side Effects
Side effects are usually limited to the skin.
Common and usually mild:
- Warmth, redness or stinging
- Itching or a mild rash
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Blistering, peeling, severe burning or a spreading rash where you applied it.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
- Black stools, vomiting blood or stomach pain (rare with gels, but possible with heavy use).
Who Should Not Use It
Do not use Counterpain PLUS if you:
- Are allergic to aspirin, salicylates or any NSAID.
- Take a blood thinner such as warfarin.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy, or want to use it on a child.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Take NSAID tablets or daily aspirin.
- Have asthma triggered by aspirin.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Never use with a heating pad or tight bandage.

How to Store It
- Store at room temperature, below 86°F (30°C). Do not freeze.
- Close the cap tightly after each use.
- Keep out of reach of children — swallowing a medicated gel or balm can be harmful.
