What is Celebrex 100mg?
Celebrex 100mg is the Indian-market version of Pfizer’s Celebrex. Each capsule contains 100 mg of celecoxib, a prescription anti-inflammatory used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, and for short-term relief of acute pain.
It is the same active ingredient, made by the same company, as the Celebrex sold in U.S. pharmacies, packed for the Indian market. A lower-cost generic of the same strength is Cobix 100mg from Cipla.
How Celecoxib Works
Pain and swelling after an injury, or in an arthritic joint, are driven largely by chemicals called prostaglandins. Your body makes them using two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 is switched on at the site of inflammation; COX-1 also helps protect the stomach lining and keeps platelets working.
Celecoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor. It blocks mainly COX-2, so it reduces pain and inflammation with a lower risk of stomach ulcers than older NSAIDs such as naproxen or diclofenac. The risk is lower, not zero, and selective COX-2 inhibitors carry the same warnings about heart attack and stroke as other NSAIDs.
How to Take Celebrex 100mg
- Osteoarthritis: the usual dose is 200 mg a day — two 100 mg capsules once a day, or one capsule twice a day.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: usually 100–200 mg twice a day.
- Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food; taking it with food can ease stomach upset.
- Pain relief usually starts within an hour. For arthritis, the full effect on stiffness and swelling builds over a week or two of regular use.
- Use the lowest dose that works, for the shortest time you need it.
The 100 mg strength is useful when you need to fine-tune the dose — for example people over 65, smaller adults, or anyone with mild liver problems, where doctors often start lower.

Side Effects
Most people take celecoxib without trouble. Side effects are more likely at higher doses and with long-term use.
Common and usually mild:
- Indigestion, stomach pain or heartburn
- Diarrhea or gas
- Headache or dizziness
- Swelling of the ankles
- Sore throat or blocked nose
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Black, tarry or bloody stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds — signs of stomach bleeding.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech — NSAIDs can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, or a widespread rash — a possible allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine — possible liver problems.
- Passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the legs and ankles.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Celebrex if you:
- Are allergic to celecoxib, or have had asthma, hives or a reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID.
- Have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or bowel, or have had one in the past.
- Have severe heart failure, or are about to have (or have just had) heart bypass surgery.
- Have severe kidney or liver disease.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Are allergic to sulfonamide (“sulfa”) medicines — celecoxib contains a sulfonamide group.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure or have had a stroke, or smoke.
- Take a blood thinner (warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel), low-dose aspirin, an SSRI antidepressant, steroids, lithium, methotrexate, or a blood-pressure medicine such as an ACE inhibitor, ARB or diuretic.
- Are over 65, drink alcohol regularly, or have had stomach problems in the past.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take two NSAIDs together — that includes over-the-counter ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the lowest dose that controls your pain for the shortest time.
