What is Indocap 25mg?
Indocap 25mg contains 25 mg of indomethacin in each capsule. It is made by Jagsonpal Pharmaceuticals in India and is equivalent to the indomethacin capsules sold in the USA (formerly Indocin).
Indomethacin is one of the most potent traditional NSAIDs. Doctors use it mainly for acute gout attacks, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis flares, and painful shoulder conditions such as bursitis and tendinitis. It is also the treatment of choice for a few rare headache types.
How Indomethacin Works
Indomethacin blocks COX-1 and COX-2, sharply reducing prostaglandin production. It is strong at relieving inflammatory pain — which is why it is a standard choice for gout — but it also causes more headaches, dizziness and stomach upset than most other NSAIDs.
How to Take Indocap 25mg
- Arthritis: 25 mg two or three times a day, increased by your doctor if needed (maximum 200 mg a day).
- Acute gout: typically 50 mg three times a day until the pain is under control, then reduced and stopped — usually within 3–5 days.
- Bursitis or tendinitis: 75–150 mg a day in divided doses for 7–14 days.
- Always take with food or milk to protect your stomach.
Using Indocap for a Gout Attack
A gout flare responds best when treatment starts within the first 24 hours. Indomethacin treats the pain and swelling of the attack but does not lower uric acid. Long-term prevention needs a uric-acid-lowering medicine such as Zyloric (allopurinol) or Febutaz (febuxostat).
Side Effects
Indomethacin is effective but has more side effects than most NSAIDs, especially in older adults.
Common and usually mild:
- Headache — the most common side effect
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Indigestion, nausea or stomach pain
- Tiredness or difficulty concentrating
- Ringing in the ears
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Black, tarry or bloody stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds — signs of stomach bleeding.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech — NSAIDs can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, or a widespread rash — a possible allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine — possible liver problems.
- Passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the legs and ankles.
- Confusion, depression or unusual mood changes.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Indocap if you:
- Are allergic to indomethacin, or have had asthma, hives or a reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID.
- Have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or bowel, or have had one in the past.
- Have severe heart failure, or are about to have (or have just had) heart bypass surgery.
- Have severe kidney or liver disease.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure or have had a stroke, or smoke.
- Take a blood thinner (warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel), low-dose aspirin, an SSRI antidepressant, steroids, lithium, methotrexate, or a blood-pressure medicine such as an ACE inhibitor, ARB or diuretic.
- Are over 65, drink alcohol regularly, or have had stomach problems in the past.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease or a mental-health condition — indomethacin can worsen them.
Do not take two NSAIDs together — that includes over-the-counter ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the lowest dose that controls your pain for the shortest time. Older adults are often advised to choose a different NSAID because of the higher risk of confusion and dizziness.
