What is Sibelium 5mg?
Sibelium 5mg contains 5 mg of flunarizine and is made by Janssen. Unlike triptans, it is a preventive medicine: taken every evening, it reduces how often migraines happen.

How Flunarizine Works
Flunarizine is a calcium-channel blocker that also has antihistamine effects. By limiting calcium flow into nerve and blood-vessel cells, it makes the brain less prone to the wave of activity that triggers a migraine. It does not stop an attack that has already started — keep a triptan such as Suminat or Rizact for that.
How to Take Sibelium 5mg
- Adults under 65: 10 mg (two tablets) once a day at bedtime.
- Adults 65 and over: 5 mg (one tablet) at bedtime.
- Take it in the evening — drowsiness is common.
- Give it 2 months to judge the effect. If there is no improvement, stop and talk to your doctor.
- If it helps, doctors usually review treatment every 6 months and may suggest a break to see if it is still needed.
Side Effects
Flunarizine is usually well tolerated, but some effects build up over time.
Common and usually mild:
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Increased appetite and weight gain
- Heartburn or nausea
- Dry mouth
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Low mood, loss of interest or thoughts of self-harm — stop and contact a doctor straight away.
- Tremor, stiffness, slow movement or restlessness — signs of movement side effects.
- Swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Sibelium if you:
- Have depression now or have had it in the past.
- Have Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders.
- Are allergic to flunarizine or cinnarizine.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Take sedatives, sleeping pills or drink alcohol regularly — drowsiness adds up.
- Are over 65.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
