What is Suminat 100mg?

Suminat 100mg is Sun Pharma’s full-strength sumatriptan tablet. Each tablet contains 100 mg of sumatriptan — the highest single dose of sumatriptan approved for migraine.

It is for adults whose migraines have not responded well enough to 50 mg. Studies show 100 mg gives slightly more people pain relief than 50 mg, at the cost of somewhat more side effects, so many doctors start lower with Suminat 25mg.

How Sumatriptan Works

During a migraine, blood vessels around the brain widen and nerves release inflammatory signals, including a protein called CGRP. Sumatriptan is a triptan: it stimulates serotonin receptors (5-HT1B and 5-HT1D) that narrow those vessels and switch off the release of pain signals.

Triptans treat a migraine that has already started — they do not prevent attacks. They work best taken early, while the headache is still mild, and they also ease the nausea and sensitivity to light and sound that come with a migraine. They do not help ordinary tension headaches.

How to Take Suminat 100mg

• Take one tablet with water at the first sign of migraine pain.
• If the migraine returns after improving, a second tablet may be taken after at least 2 hours.
• Never take more than 200 mg (two tablets) in 24 hours.
• If you have mild to moderate liver problems, the maximum single dose is 50 mg — this tablet is too strong.

Getting the Most From a Triptan

• Take it early — while the headache is still mild — rather than waiting to see if it gets worse.
• Rest in a dark, quiet room if you can.
• Keep a headache diary. If you have four or more migraine days a month, ask about prevention, such as flunarizine or propranolol.
• If one triptan does not work after three attacks, a different one — for example rizatriptan — may suit you better.

Side Effects

Triptan side effects are usually brief, often lasting less than an hour.

Common and usually mild:

• Tingling, warmth or flushing
• Tightness or heaviness in the chest, throat, neck or jaw
• Drowsiness or dizziness
• Tiredness or weakness
• Dry mouth or nausea

Who Should Not Take It

Talk to a doctor first if you:

• Have risk factors for heart disease — high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, a family history, or you are a man over 40 or a woman past menopause. Your doctor may want to check your heart first.
• Take an SSRI or SNRI antidepressant (for example fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine).
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Use pain relievers or triptans on 10 or more days a month — this can cause medication-overuse headache.

How to Store It

• Store at room temperature, below 86°F (30°C), away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
• Keep the tablets in their strip until you need one; do not keep them in the bathroom.
• Keep out of reach of children and pets.
