It is a heart and blood-pressure medicine rather than a painkiller. Doctors prescribe it for high blood pressure, angina, irregular heart rhythms, migraine prevention, essential tremor, and the physical symptoms of anxiety. It is also used after a heart attack to protect the heart.
How Propranolol Works
Propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker. It blocks the effects of adrenaline on the heart and blood vessels, so the heart beats more slowly and with less force. That lowers blood pressure, reduces the heart’s oxygen needs in angina, steadies some irregular rhythms, and calms the physical symptoms of anxiety — racing heart, tremor, sweating. It also reduces how often migraines happen, although exactly why is not fully understood.
How to Take Inderal 40mg
These are immediate-release tablets, usually taken two or three times a day. Your doctor sets the dose:
- High blood pressure: often 40 mg twice a day to start, adjusted over weeks.
- Migraine prevention: usually 80–160 mg a day in divided doses; it takes 4–6 weeks to judge the effect.
- Essential tremor or anxiety symptoms: 40 mg two or three times a day, or a single dose before a stressful event if prescribed.
- Angina: 40 mg two or three times a day, increased as needed.
Take it at the same times each day, with or without food — but be consistent. If you would prefer one dose a day, the long-acting Ciplar-LA 40mg releases propranolol over 24 hours.
Side Effects
Most side effects are mild and ease after the first couple of weeks.
Common and usually mild:
- Tiredness or reduced exercise stamina
- Cold hands and feet
- Slow pulse
- Vivid dreams or trouble sleeping
- Dizziness when standing up
- Nausea or diarrhea
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Wheezing or tightness in the chest.
- A very slow pulse (below about 50) with dizziness or fainting.
- Swelling of the ankles, sudden weight gain or worsening breathlessness — signs of heart failure.
- Chest pain that is new or worse.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Inderal if you:
- Have asthma or have ever had wheezing or bronchospasm — propranolol can trigger a severe asthma attack.
- Have a very slow heart rate, heart block or sick sinus syndrome (unless you have a pacemaker).
- Have heart failure that is not under control, or very low blood pressure.
- Have severe circulation problems in the legs or Raynaud’s phenomenon.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have diabetes — propranolol can hide the warning signs of low blood sugar, such as a racing heart.
- Have COPD, thyroid disease, liver or kidney disease, depression or myasthenia gravis.
- Take verapamil or diltiazem, other blood-pressure medicines, rizatriptan, or medicines for heart rhythm.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are due to have surgery.
Never stop propranolol suddenly, especially if you have angina or heart disease. Stopping abruptly can cause a rebound in heart rate and blood pressure and trigger chest pain. Your doctor will reduce the dose over 1–2 weeks.
