What is Fastum Gel?
Fastum Gel is a ketoprofen 2.5% anti-inflammatory gel made by Menarini, one of Europe’s best-known pain-relief brands. It is used for sprains, bruises, tendinitis, back pain, sports injuries and arthritis of the knees and fingers.
Ketoprofen gels are among the most effective topical NSAIDs in independent reviews. Ketoprofen gel is not approved by the FDA; in the USA, diclofenac gel is the nearest equivalent.
How Ketoprofen Gel Works
Ketoprofen blocks COX enzymes in the tissue under the skin, reducing the prostaglandins that cause pain and swelling. It penetrates the skin well, so it reaches joints and tendons close to the surface, while blood levels stay low.
How to Use Fastum Gel
- Apply a strip of 2–4 inches (about 5–10 cm) to the painful area and massage it in gently.
- Use 2 or 3 times a day.
- Do not use for more than 10 days without a doctor’s advice.
Protect the treated skin from the sun
- Ketoprofen can cause a serious skin reaction when treated skin is exposed to sunlight or a sunbed (photosensitivity).
- Keep the area covered with clothing while you use the gel and for 2 weeks after you stop.
- Do not use it if you have ever reacted to a sunscreen containing octocrylene or to fenofibrate.
- Apply only to unbroken skin — never to cuts, grazes, eczema or infected skin.
- Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, nose and genitals. Wash your hands after applying, unless you are treating your hands.
- Do not cover the area with a tight bandage or use a heating pad over it.
- Do not use more than one pain-relief rub on the same area at the same time.
- Stop and see a doctor if the pain has not improved after 7 days, or gets worse.
Side Effects
Most people have no side effects. Skin reactions are the main thing to watch for.
Common and usually mild:
- Redness, itching or a mild rash where applied
- A burning feeling on the skin
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- A blistering or eczema-like rash on skin exposed to the sun.
- Blistering, peeling, severe burning or a spreading rash where you applied it.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
- Black stools, vomiting blood or stomach pain (rare with gels, but possible with heavy use).
Who Should Not Use It
Do not use Fastum Gel if you:
- Are allergic to ketoprofen, aspirin, other NSAIDs, fenofibrate or octocrylene sunscreens.
- Have had a skin reaction to sunlight with any medicine.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Want to use it on broken or infected skin, or on a child.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Take NSAID tablets as well.
- Have asthma triggered by aspirin.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Please consult your doctor before using this medicine.
How to Store It
- Store at room temperature, below 86°F (30°C). Do not freeze.
- Close the cap tightly after each use.
- Keep out of reach of children — swallowing a medicated gel or balm can be harmful.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the tube.
