What is Etozox 90mg?
Etozox 90mg contains 90 mg of etoricoxib, a long-acting COX-2 selective anti-inflammatory made by Cipla. The 90 mg dose is used where inflammation is more active — rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis — and, for a few days only, for acute pain.
For osteoarthritis, the lower Etozox 60mg is the recommended dose.
How Etoricoxib Works
Etoricoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor, in the same family as celecoxib. It blocks the enzyme that produces inflammatory prostaglandins at the site of pain and swelling, while largely sparing the COX-1 enzyme that protects the stomach lining.
Its long half-life — about 22 hours — means one tablet a day is enough. It is widely prescribed in Europe, the UK, Latin America and Asia, but it has not been approved by the FDA and is not sold in U.S. pharmacies. The FDA’s concern was the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events.
How to Take Etozox 90mg
- Rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis: one 90 mg tablet once a day. Many people step down to 60 mg once symptoms settle.
- Acute pain (for example after dental surgery): 90 mg once a day for no more than 3 days.
- Acute gout attack: doctors outside the USA sometimes use 120 mg once daily for up to 8 days — only on medical advice.
- Take with or without food, at the same time each day.
Blood Pressure and Heart Safety
Etoricoxib raises blood pressure in a noticeable minority of people, and the effect is dose-related — it is more common at 90 mg than at 60 mg. If you already have high blood pressure, it must be well controlled before you start.
- Check your blood pressure in the first two weeks.
- Stop and see a doctor if you notice swelling of the legs, breathlessness or chest pain.
- Ask about switching to 60 mg once your symptoms are under control.
Side Effects
Etoricoxib is generally well tolerated for short courses. The side effects to watch for are those of all NSAIDs, plus a tendency to raise blood pressure.
Common and usually mild:
- Raised blood pressure
- Swelling of the ankles or fluid retention
- Indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
- Headache or dizziness
- Tiredness
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Black, tarry or bloody stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds — signs of stomach bleeding.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech — NSAIDs can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, or a widespread rash — a possible allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine — possible liver problems.
- Passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the legs and ankles.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Etozox if you:
- Are allergic to etoricoxib, or have had asthma, hives or a reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID.
- Have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or bowel, or have had one in the past.
- Have severe heart failure, or are about to have (or have just had) heart bypass surgery.
- Have severe kidney or liver disease.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Have high blood pressure that is not well controlled.
- Have coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease or have had a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA).
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure or have had a stroke, or smoke.
- Take a blood thinner (warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel), low-dose aspirin, an SSRI antidepressant, steroids, lithium, methotrexate, or a blood-pressure medicine such as an ACE inhibitor, ARB or diuretic.
- Are over 65, drink alcohol regularly, or have had stomach problems in the past.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take two NSAIDs together — that includes over-the-counter ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the lowest dose that controls your pain for the shortest time.
Please consult your doctor before using this medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Etozox 90mg used for?
It treats rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, and is used for up to three days for acute pain such as after dental surgery.
Can I use Etozox 90mg for osteoarthritis?
The recommended osteoarthritis dose is 60 mg. 90 mg adds more risk of side effects without much more relief for osteoarthritis.
How long can I take Etozox 90mg for acute pain?
No more than 3 days. For longer-term pain, see a doctor about the right treatment.
Is Etozox 90mg stronger than Celebrex?
They work in a similar way. 90 mg of etoricoxib is roughly comparable to the higher doses of celecoxib used for inflammatory arthritis.
Is etoricoxib approved in the USA?
No. It is approved in the UK, Europe and many other countries but not by the FDA.
What should I do if my ankles swell on Etozox?
Ankle swelling can be a sign of fluid retention or heart strain. Stop taking it and see a doctor.
