What is Diclofenac 50mg?
Diclofenac 50mg is a generic diclofenac tablet from Cipla. Diclofenac is one of the most widely used anti-inflammatories in the world — sold as Voltaren and Cataflam — and is prescribed for arthritis, back pain, sprains, gout attacks, dental pain and period pain.
It is a strong, fast-acting NSAID, which makes it good for short courses of moderate pain. Its main downside is that it is harder on the heart and liver than some alternatives at high doses, so it is best used at the lowest dose for the shortest time.
How Diclofenac Works
Diclofenac blocks both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, cutting the production of prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and fever. It is particularly potent against COX-2, which is why it relieves inflammatory pain well — and why its cardiovascular risk is closer to that of the COX-2 inhibitors than to naproxen.
How to Take Diclofenac 50mg
- Usual adult dose: one 50 mg tablet two or three times a day (100–150 mg a day).
- Do not take more than 150 mg in 24 hours.
- Swallow whole with water, with or after food. Do not crush or chew coated tablets.
- For short-term pain, stop once the pain settles — most courses are a few days to two weeks.
Diclofenac and Your Heart
Large studies found that diclofenac at 150 mg a day raises the risk of heart attack and stroke about as much as high-dose COX-2 inhibitors. In the UK it is no longer recommended for people with heart failure, heart disease, peripheral artery disease or a past stroke. If you have any of these, ask your doctor about an alternative such as naproxen or a topical gel like Voveran Emulgel.
Side Effects
Most side effects are mild and stop when you stop the tablets.
Common and usually mild:
- Indigestion, stomach pain or nausea
- Diarrhea
- Headache or dizziness
- Raised liver enzymes on blood tests
- Rash
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Black, tarry or bloody stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds — signs of stomach bleeding.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech — NSAIDs can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, or a widespread rash — a possible allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine — possible liver problems.
- Passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the legs and ankles.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Diclofenac if you:
- Are allergic to diclofenac, or have had asthma, hives or a reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID.
- Have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or bowel, or have had one in the past.
- Have severe heart failure, or are about to have (or have just had) heart bypass surgery.
- Have severe kidney or liver disease.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Have heart disease, peripheral artery disease, or have had a stroke or mini-stroke.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure or have had a stroke, or smoke.
- Take a blood thinner (warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel), low-dose aspirin, an SSRI antidepressant, steroids, lithium, methotrexate, or a blood-pressure medicine such as an ACE inhibitor, ARB or diuretic.
- Are over 65, drink alcohol regularly, or have had stomach problems in the past.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take two NSAIDs together — that includes over-the-counter ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the lowest dose that controls your pain for the shortest time.
