What is Cobix 200mg?
Cobix 200mg is Cipla’s generic version of Celebrex 200 mg. Each capsule contains 200 mg of celecoxib — the standard once-daily dose for osteoarthritis — so many people need only one capsule a day.
It is prescribed for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute pain and painful periods. Because celecoxib targets the COX-2 enzyme, it is often chosen for people who get indigestion from older anti-inflammatories.
How Celecoxib Works
Pain and swelling after an injury, or in an arthritic joint, are driven largely by chemicals called prostaglandins. Your body makes them using two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 is switched on at the site of inflammation; COX-1 also helps protect the stomach lining and keeps platelets working.
Celecoxib is a selective COX-2 inhibitor. It blocks mainly COX-2, so it reduces pain and inflammation with a lower risk of stomach ulcers than older NSAIDs such as naproxen or diclofenac. The risk is lower, not zero, and selective COX-2 inhibitors carry the same warnings about heart attack and stroke as other NSAIDs.
How to Take Cobix 200mg
- Osteoarthritis: one 200 mg capsule once a day.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: one capsule (200 mg) twice a day is the usual maximum; some people need only 100 mg twice a day.
- Ankylosing spondylitis: 200 mg once a day, sometimes increased to 400 mg a day by a doctor.
- Swallow whole with water, with or without food.
- If you need less than 200 mg, Cobix 100mg is easier than opening capsules.
Review with your doctor every few months whether you still need it. Long-term daily NSAID use should be the lowest dose that keeps symptoms under control.
Long-Term Use: Heart, Stomach and Kidneys
Many people with arthritis take celecoxib for months or years. Large trials found celecoxib at moderate doses had no more heart risk than naproxen or ibuprofen, but all NSAIDs carry a boxed warning in the USA about heart attack, stroke and stomach bleeding.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly — NSAIDs can raise it.
- Ask for a kidney function blood test once or twice a year if you take it daily.
- If you also take low-dose aspirin or are over 65, your doctor may add a stomach-protecting medicine such as omeprazole.
Side Effects
Most people take celecoxib without trouble. Side effects are more likely at higher doses and with long-term use.
Common and usually mild:
- Indigestion, stomach pain or heartburn
- Diarrhea or gas
- Headache or dizziness
- Swelling of the ankles
- Sore throat or blocked nose
Stop and get medical help right away if you have:
- Black, tarry or bloody stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds — signs of stomach bleeding.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body or slurred speech — NSAIDs can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, or a widespread rash — a possible allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine — possible liver problems.
- Passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the legs and ankles.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not use Cobix if you:
- Are allergic to celecoxib, or have had asthma, hives or a reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID.
- Have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or bowel, or have had one in the past.
- Have severe heart failure, or are about to have (or have just had) heart bypass surgery.
- Have severe kidney or liver disease.
- Are in the last three months of pregnancy.
- Are allergic to sulfonamide (“sulfa”) medicines — celecoxib contains a sulfonamide group.
Talk to a doctor first if you:
- Have heart disease, high blood pressure or have had a stroke, or smoke.
- Take a blood thinner (warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel), low-dose aspirin, an SSRI antidepressant, steroids, lithium, methotrexate, or a blood-pressure medicine such as an ACE inhibitor, ARB or diuretic.
- Are over 65, drink alcohol regularly, or have had stomach problems in the past.
- Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take two NSAIDs together — that includes over-the-counter ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the lowest dose that controls your pain for the shortest time.
